Add Object List functionality to documents
This could either be a second tab alternative to the libraryor a third tab on the right side (Element, Document), or, more ideally, could take the place of the Layers pane of the Element Inspector.
The object list should present a hierarchical view where the Document is the root of the tree. All objects in the current layout would be somewhere on branches from that root (e.g. Layer->Group[->Group[->group]]->Object,Object,Object).
Each element in the hierarchy which has children should have the traditional expand/collapse rotating triangle widget.
Selecting an object, range, or group in this area should be identical to selecting it in the layout. (It should get highlighted in both locations regardless of where it is selected). Layer operations (hide/show, lock/unlock) could be managed via toggles on a context-menu from right-clicking (command-clicking) the Layer object in the new object list.

I think you're on the right track. As to confusing new users, I actually think that the way it's presented in those applications makes it pretty intuitive. Literally everything on the screen is an object. That's not too hard to grasp. This is just a list of all of the objects, arranged along the same lines of the hierarchy in which the objects are connected to each other. (Tracks are part of groups (or not) which are part of layers, etc.).
Certainly making displaying this pane optional would be acceptable, but I'm not 100% sure it's a better or less confusing option than simply adding the required functionality into the layer list. Defaulting to all layers collapsed would provide identical functionality to the current system except for the triangle at the left of each layer that would allow for expanding said layer.
I will note that this is not dissimilar to an earlier feature request that had 5 votes and got declined ("Object List").

So if I understand this correctly this would be similar to how Layer lists expand e.g. in Illustrator or Affinity Designer: https://goo.gl/images/urXg7a
A nice feature indeed, though ideally an opt-in to not confuse users starting with the app or not too familiar with 'big' vector drawing/CAD apps.
