Revised link: https://www.nmra.org/index-nmra-standards-and-recommended-practices is RP page, section 7 goes into great detail.

Here are some really simple options, increasing in complexity.

1: basic clearance. User enters a clearance distance (distance from centreline), and the layout renders a coloured zone around all tracks showing the required clearance.

Extension: and can highlight if clearances overlap

Issue: actually 3 clearances: straight, inner corner, outer corner

    Fancier version:
    - user-managed database of clearance entries. Each entry contains label, scale (or gauge), straight clearance, inner clearance, outer clearance.

To display clearance, pick an entry from the table and render as above, except that straights render with the straight clearance and corners render with inner & outer clearance.

This is not quite precise, as there are clearance transitions from straight to curve, but it will be close enough.

Could also add a "clearance assistant"

Clearance assistant: provide rectangular box with two "pivot points" on centreline. Can enter length, width, distance of LH pivot point from end, (optional) distance of RH pivot point from end (if not symmetrical). Once data entered, calculates overhang values and user can save them as entry.

MVP: option 1: just let me enter a length in mm in the document pane and have the option to render a "clearance zone" that many mm from centerline.
